Today is World Password Day, making it the perfect time to update your passwords and ensure they’re as secure as possible. We’ve written about the benefits of a strong password numerous times so, to celebrate World Password Day, here are a few things to bear in mind when selecting a new password:
- Never use your real name, company name, date of birth or any other information about yourself that could be guessed or discovered online – this goes for children’s names, favourite football teams and anniversaries.
2. Use a mixture of characters, including upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers.
3. Eight characters should be the minimum length you go for, though many services suggest 15+ characters.
4. Use different passwords for different services – it minimises the damage that can be done in case of a password breach. To help keep your numerous passwords organised you could look into using a password management service like LastPass.
For those who want to get involved with World Password Day, there’s even a Twitter chat happening at 3pm ET under the hashtag #PasswordDay. Have fun!
